The One Who StayedNgười Ở Lại

The bond-servant and elephant-keeper who turned Trần Hưng Đạo back toward the river with nine words — and the country saved by the men who don't run.

A true story, honestly told. Almost everything we know of Dã Tượng is a single paragraph in the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư — a bond-servant, a beast's name, and nine words on a road. This book builds a whole life in the spirit of that paragraph, and marks openly, as it goes, which stones are the old wall and which were set by the author.
How to say the names. A pronunciation guide and a full cast list wait in the back of the book (in The History Behind the Story), so a reader new to Vietnamese never has to guess.
Its twin. This is the matched companion to Book Sixteen, The Breath He Held — Yết Kiêu held the boat from below the water; Dã Tượng held the road on the land. Two halves of one truth about who really carries a country.

They can give you a beast's name to make you small. They cannot stop you from being the one thing on the field that will not run.— CườngFBI
