A true story, honestly told. Almost everything we know of Dã Tượng is a single paragraph in the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư — a bond-servant, a beast's name, and nine words on a road. This book builds a whole life in the spirit of that paragraph, and marks openly, as it goes, which stones are the old wall and which were set by the author.
How to say the names. A pronunciation guide and a full cast list wait in the back of the book (in The History Behind the Story), so a reader new to Vietnamese never has to guess.
